Every year, the Webb County Heritage Foundation conducts a county-wide competition among graduating seniors. The only criterion used for the winner is that she or he write an essay on some aspect of their family history, traditions, or customs.

This year’s scholarship winner is Ms. Victoria Lee Paez from St. Augustine High School.

Ms. Paez’ essay is a tribute to her grandmother, Maria Beatriz Garcia, who is her role model for relentless hard work, adaptability, and commitment to the best possible education for her descendants. Ms. Paez expertly expands on this theme to reflect on how this culture of hard work and desire for a better life through education is found throughout the majority of Laredo families. It is a touching composition filled with admiration and love for a very strong woman – her grandmother.

Ms. Paez is the daughter of Patricia Guajardo and Mario Paez, and has listed the University of the Incarnate Word as her first choice for college.
