The Webb County Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation, heritage education, and heritage tourism, announces an annual scholarship for local students. The President of the Republic of the Rio Grande Scholarship will award $500.00 for the purpose of assisting a student in pursuit of a college degree. The scholarship is not necessarily restricted to those students interested in pursuing a history degree. The only requirements for application are the following:
The applicant must be a candidate for graduation in May, 2016 from a high school located in Webb County.
Along with the scholarship application form, the applicant must provide a one-page typed, double-spaced essay on his/her family history. Family histories may include (but are not limited to) the following examples:
· Descriptions of life in Laredo (or border region) as recounted by a family member;
· Memories of a grandparent;
· History of a family business;
· Descriptions of family traditions or customs
The applicant must provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or administrator.
No school transcripts are necessary. Please do not send personal resumes. Awards of
scholarships are NOT based on financial need.
Deadline for applications is Friday, April 8, 2016 at 5 p.m. No exceptions will be made to this
deadline. Faxed applications will not be accepted. Applications should be mailed or hand-delivered to:

The Webb County Heritage Foundation’s Scholarship Committee will judge the applications and
select a finalist in mid-April. The Scholarship will be presented at the Founder’s Day Celebration on May 14, 2016. The Scholarship winner is required to be present at this event or send a representative to receive the award.
