Nominations Requested for Heritage Awards 2015
Each year, the Webb County Heritage Foundation recognizes individuals, businesses, organizations, and families that have contributed to the unique architectural and cultural heritage of Webb County.
The Foundation invites you to nominate those who have made significant contribution toward preserving the heritage of Laredo. These significant contributions may be in the areas of historic preservation, rehabilitation, and/or conservation of buildings, documents, photographs, traditions, folklore or customs which enrich the community life in Laredo and Webb County.
Deadline for the nominations is April 10, 2015. Awards will be announced at the Webb County Heritage Foundation’s Founders’ Day Celebration on May 23rd.
Webb County Heritage Foundation Award Categories
- Jim Parish Award for Documentation and Publication of Local and Regional History:
Presented to recognize and encourage research and documentation of regional history through publication of
original material which preserves records or recounts local or regional history. - Historic Rehabilitation Award:
In recognition of those individuals, organizations, foundations, or associations making significant contributions
toward the adaptive reuse of historic structures within Webb County. - Good Neighbor Award:
Recognizing individuals, institutions, organizations, foundations, or associations located outside of Webb County,
including Mexico, which have made significant contributions in the filed of historic preservation and cultural
awareness in Webb County. - Luciano Guajardo Award:
In recognition of efforts to promote awareness of the history, architecture, and folklore of the region. - Historic Preservation Award- Residential:
In recognition of those individuals, organizations, foundations, or associations making significant contributions
toward preserving the heritage of Webb County. - Environmental Preservation Award:
In recognition of those individuals, organizations, foundations, or associations making significant contributions
toward preserving the environmental heritage of Webb County. - Meritorious Service Award:
Providing recognition to individual and organizations making significant contributions of time, talent, or treasure
to the preservation of Webb County Heritage. - Historical Awareness by Business:
In recognition of efforts by a business organizations to illuminate the history, architecture, and folklore of the
region. - Contemporary Architectural Design Incorporation Traditional Elements:
Recognizing the design and constructions of new buildings incorporating traditional design elements and/ or
methods. - Volunteer Service Award:
In recognition of contributions of time, talent or expertise in the promotion of the programs and services of the
Webb County Heritage Foundation and the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum. - Preservation of Folklore, Customs, and Traditions Award:
In recognition of the perpetuation of folklore, customs, and traditions which add to the quality of community life
in Laredo and Webb County. - Archival Donor Award:
For the generous patronage of the Webb County Heritage Foundation archives by the donation of a gift of
historical photos, documents, records, published materials, or artifacts that recount or reflect the history and heritage of Webb County and are made available to the public. - Special Lifetime Achievement Award:
In recognition of individuals, institutions, or organizations who have made significant contributions to the
preservation of Webb County Heritage on a continuous basis. - Young Preservationist Award:
In recognition of students, individual under age 18, or youth organizations, foundations, or associations making
significant contributions toward preserving the environmental heritage of Webb County. - The Ricardo Hernández Memorial Award for Achievement in Laredo History Education:
In recognition of outstanding achievement by a student, teacher, or administrator in the Laredo History
curriculum.

2014 Heritage Award Winner
Customs/Traditions Award was presented to María Eugenia (Jeannie) López for her commitment to preserving our community’s artistic heritage through ongoing contributions to local theater productions.

The Meritorious Service Award was presented to Dr. Stan Green, recently retired professor of history at Texas A&M International University, for his lifetime work of preserving and promoting our community’s history
2014 Heritage Award Winners
The Environmental Preservation Award was presented to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center for their creation and development of a public organic garden.
2014 Heritage Award Winners
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the Sisters of Mercy of Laredo on the occasion of their 120th anniversary of providing health services to our city.
2014 Heritage Award Winners
The Ricardo Hernández Memorial Award for Achievement in Laredo History Education was presented to J.W. Nixon High School – Gerardo Cruz, principal, and Alfonso Ruiz, instructor in the Laredo History course. This award was also shared by Nixon students Lizeth Aimee Terrazas and Samantha Rodriguez who were honored for their development of a “Laredo Lotería” game utilizing images of local historic landmarks and designed as part of their Laredo History coursework.

Luciano Guajardo Award was presented to Alberto Guajardo, Social Studies teacher at Lamar Bruni Vergara Middle School for his commitment to promoting awareness of history, architecture and folklore of our region to his students.
2014 Heritage Award Winner
Dr. Sonia Hernández, an associate professor of history at the University of Texas–Pan American in Edinburg, received the Jim Parish Award for Documentation and Publication of Local and Regional History for her book, Working Women into the Borderlands(TAMU Press, 2014). Drawing extensively on bi-national archival sources, newspapers, and published records, Working Women into the Borderlands it demonstrates convincingly how women’s labor contributions shaped the development of one of the most dynamic and contentious borderlands in the globe.
